Individuals working in the field of construction engineering technologies use knowledge of construction methods, business operations and management skills to oversee a construction project. They work on residential or commercial buildings, bridges, roads or other similar projects. Common jobs assumed by graduates of these programs include construction manager and cost estimator. Construction Manager
Construction managers plan, organize, direct and coordinate building projects. They select contractors to construct aspects of the project, but do not physically build the project. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), companies favor candidates who have a bachelor's degree. The BLS reports that in 2013, there were 213,720 construction managers in the nation, and that these managers earned a mean annual salary of $92,700. Also according to the BLS, the field is projected to experience 16% growth during the 2012-2022 decade.
Cost Estimator
A cost estimator is responsible for creating the budget for a project to bid on it or aid in the project's management. The BLS also states that most candidates with a degree in a construction-related field may have an edge over those who don't. A 2013 BLS report states that, at that time, there were 202,600 cost estimators in the nation and that these estimators earned a mean annual salary of $63,660. The BLS projects that the field will experience 26% growth in the 2012-2022 decade.
Degree Options
Associate degree programs focus on subjects like contracts, construction methods, scheduling and estimating. Bachelor's degree programs in construction engineering technology include coursework on estimating, project management, structural analysis, dynamics, land use planning and construction labor. Master's degree programs are available in construction engineering or engineering systems with a concentration in construction management.
